Matthew 5:1-12. The Beatitudes

What does the term “blessed,” mean? I have been reading in Matthew chapter 5 verses 1 through 12 about the Beatitudes. The word “blessed” is used repeatedly and I think it means to make something holier. Take a moment to read the beatitudes and mark every time is says, “Blessed”. I think we can come to understand that the Beatitudes are things that will help us come closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. I am going to choose three Beatitudes and write about how they increase my happiness.

1. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
There was a time in my life when I did not “hunger and thirst after righteousness” and it took me some time to realize that I was missing out on being fully happy. When I decided to make changes and begin doing all of the things to keep the Spirit with me I was a happier person. There is this intense level of excitement and joy I feel at times when I read my scriptures or think about the natural beauty of the Earth or Heavenly Father’s love for me. This feeling is such a high and I desire more and I think that is why we need to constantly be filling ourselves with righteousness.
2. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
In my life I have found that there are times when I have needed to be the “peacemaker” and I think I was blessed to even have that ability in the first place. I think being a peacemaker is trying to help everyone work together. People are happier when we work together without fighting or saying rude things. When we live like this we are being examples of righteous children of God.
3. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
I think we all have times in our lives when we feel ridiculed or persecuted for something different about ourselves. For me, it has been religion at times. I think this is why it is so important to have a strong spiritual base so that when the insults come we can stay firm. When I stand up for my beliefs I feel strong, confident, and happier because I know I am doing what is right.
